One of the greatest privileges of being a parent is that God can and will use every moment and opportunity to reveal His heart toward us.
It is easy in the dark nights for us to doubt God’s ability and willingness to love us through our mistakes and failures.
When I look at the condition of your brother O, I wasn’t upset at his diagnosis. Instead, my heart was broken for him. Knowing that there is a reality where he will struggle for the rest of his life. It wasn’t his choice. It is simply the result of living in a broken world.
On the cross, Jesus prayed “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” We are helpless against sin. Even in our best effort, we are stricken by the sin that plagued us all. We fail. We make mistakes. We cannot forgives ourselves, let alone others.
Does Jesus look at us with anger? Does He look at us with disappointment? Does He feel a sense of disgust toward us? No, He looks at us with compassion and mercy. He is broken for us. He weeps for us as I have wept for O. And He comforts us with His love. As I held O, He held and holds us through our suffering.
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17)
There will be moments in yourself when you doubt that anyone could love you, forgive you for the mistakes that you’ve made, or even wanting to have anything to do with you. Remember that we love you and the God who created you in His image will never forsake you. He did not come to condemn you, but you might be saved through Him.
